Location and Getting Here
Black Mountains Gliding Club is situated on the north-eastern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park in South Wales.
Although it’s set in the very rural Brecon Beacons National Park, road routes from all directions are served by major trunk roads until the last few miles. Nearest railway stations are Hereford and Abergavenny.
The location is equidistant, in terms of drive time, from Cardiff, Swansea, Bristol and the border counties of Gloucestershire, Herefordshire/Worcestershire in the Midlands.
From South Wales and Severn Bridge.
Follow signs to Abergavenny. Then the signs for A40 Brecon. One mile or so after Crickhowell, at the Nant y Ffin inn/restaurant, turn right off the A40 on to the A479, signposted Rhyader.
After 6 miles you will reach Pengenffordd and pass “The Castle” pub (recently renamed the “Dragon’s Back Inn”) on your right before reaching the brow of the hill.
Trailers can turn right just after the brow of the hill.
Cars should continue down the main road for about a quarter mile then turn right down a narrow lane signposted “GLIDING”. Turn left at the T junction then after 100 yards bear right (both signposted). A mile further on you will see a final sign to the left at the entrance to the airfield.
From Cardiff and Swansea directions the best route is normally via Merthyr Tydfil.
Then the A470 to Brecon. From Brecon bypass the town on the A40 and rejoin the A470 and follow signs to Builth Wells.
Continue on the A470 to Bronllys. Follow signpost to Talgarth town.
There is no access to the airfield via Hospital Road.
From Hereford, Mid Wales and the Midlands
Aim for either Builth Wells or Hereford. We’re only a half hour to 50 mins from either.
