Take a flight in a dual controlled glider, with a qualified instructor. The glider will be towed up behind the tow-plane to a nearby hill or to 2000ft (dependent on conditions). You will fly within the Brecon Beacons National Park, and perhaps share a thermal with a buzzard or two. You may even see a red kite - several live nearby.

The airfield is located in an idyllic setting, at the base of the Black Mountains, with panoramic views to the west.

During the 20-30 minute flight you will be invited to take the controls. Your instructor will help you understand how the controls work and you will be able to fly the glider yourself.

This is an excellent introduction to gliding.

A guide to our introductory gliding experiences...
choose from the following!

Trial Lesson
One aerotow flight with an instructor. You can expect to fly for a minimum of 20 minutes, sometimes much longer if conditions and glider demand permit.

SuperVoucher
This option is for two people, and consists of a single trial lesson each, as described above with a discounted price. You can both expect to fly for a minimum of 20 minutes, sometimes much longer if conditions and glider demand permit. This amazing option allows you and your partner, friend, or colleague to fly on the same day, and afterwards, you can both compare your experiences of flying high over the Brecon Beacons.

Two Flight Mini Course
This consists of 2 flights with an instructor plus ground briefings. You will normally be the only pupil so will benefit from one to one attention. This is the ideal introduction to gliding - an in-depth experience with about of 60 minutes of flying time, possibly a lot more in good soaring conditions.

Three Flight Mini Course
This consists of 3 flights with an instructor plus ground briefings. You will normally be the only pupil so will benefit from one to one attention. This is the ideal introduction to gliding - an in depth experience with about 90 minutes of flying time, possibly a lot more in good soaring conditions.

Booking your flight experience

You should book the date and time for your trial lesson or mini course by calling the club on 01874 711463. Please have alternative dates in case we are booked on the date you prefer.

Who can take a trial lesson

There are very few restrictions:-

  • Age - Very young children are unlikely to benefit from a flight but many 14 year olds are able to absorb the flight and have reached the physical size to manage the controls. We have active pilots aged 70-80 years old and so, provided the person is not too frail, age is no real barrier. Children under 18 years of age must have a parent or guardian to approve the flight.

  • Size - A maximum weight of 16 stone is a safety limitation, and people over 6ft 4 inches will not fit in the cockpit.

  • Fitness - Flying is not physically demanding. You should be able to get in and out of the cockpit and be able to sign a medical declaration. If you are under medication you may need to ask your GP for advice. You should not fly if you have a cold.

On the day

If you are travelling some distance to Talgarth, we would advise calling the club after 9am on the day of your flight, just to ensure the weather is suitable for your trial lesson.

Allow plenty of time, we want you to enjoy the whole experience and soak up the airfield atmosphere.

If the weather is suitable bring a packed lunch Soft drinks and snacks are on sale in the clubhouse which also offers tea and coffee making facilities.

Friends and family are welcome, children and pets must be under close supervision, airfields are potentially dangerous. Always follow the advice of the club officials.

You will be asked to sign a temporary membership form. You automatically become a member for 3 months and this entitles you to further flights at club rates during this period.

You will receive a detailed briefing before the flight.

After the flight

Watch the flight operations for a while with your new understanding, maybe chat with club pilots. When you leave we hope you have enjoyed your day, and will return to continue your flying with us.

If you wish we will provide a certificate for you to keep.

Follow on training

The trial lesson membership lasts 3 months and further lessons can be taken at the normal club rates. During the midweek period, it is often possible to book a particular time slot to suit you. At weekends and on public holidays, we operate a flying list, and you await your training flight in turn with other members. Weekend and Public Holiday flying days are operated by club members, and it is a valuable way to see and develop new skills towards your flying career. We are able to provide long training flights far more often than any other club in the UK which makes us an ideal place to learn from the basic handling of the controls of a glider, to all the skills and experience required to fly solo, go cross-country flying, or soaring in mountain wave.

Trial lesson membership for three months is designed for people to revisit Talgarth and fly as often as they like, to help decide if gliding is the sport for them. At any time during, or after your trial lesson membership, you may wish to join the club as a permanent member. Membership forms can be downloaded here or obtained by phoning the office.
If you decide that gliding is for you, then full membership of the club will be required before your first solo flight.
